There’s something very nostalgic about riding a Ferris wheel on a warm summer night and sharing laughs over a game of skeeball and coin toss. Unfortunately, though, a seemingly fun trip to the fair or to an amusement park could turn for the worst when rides go awry.

According to San Diego Union Tribune (6/13/2015), that’s precisely what happened at a popular Northern California theme park earlier this month when two people were injured in a rollercoaster accident.

In one case, an employee sustained serious injury after being struck by one of the amusement park ride trains, and in the other case, a passenger on the same ride sustained a hand injury and was taken to the hospital for evaluation according to reports.

The rollercoaster ride was closed immediately following the injuries and will remain closed until officials are able to fully investigate the accident. Amusement park managers say they do not believe the accident occurred as a result of malfunction.

The day itself was riddled with unfortunate events, though. Earlier in the day, a 10-year-old girl was found unconscious after riding a roller coaster at a separate Southern California theme park. She was airlifted for medical treatment and officials are still determining whether the injury was related to the rollercoaster – a 113-foot looping ride that reaches up to 55 mph, according to reports.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Waterville, Maine, three children had suffered injury after riding a carnival rollercoaster ride. It came apart, according to reports, causing injury to the children shortly thereafter.

SUMMER FUN & A WORD OF CAUTION

We want everyone to have a fun, enjoyable summer. On that note, we also want to remind all parents and children that amusement rides and theme parks – including fairs and carnivals – hold an inherent risk for injury. That’s the unfortunate truth. While we certainly don’t want to spoil your summer fun, we do want to remind you of a few wise words of caution as you enjoy your outings this season.

BE IN GOOD HEALTH

Amusement parks, fairs and carnivals can all be exhausting. The sun, the whirlwind rides and the poor food choices can all lead to a very tiring day. Be sure you and your loved ones are in appropriate physical condition (steady blood pressure, no known heart or brain conditions, etc.) to actually go on rides and partake in the day’s activities. If you have any health issues in question, it’s best to just lay low on the sidelines and avoid rides that could be potentially dangerous to your health.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Maybe you’ve noticed it before… The automated announcement just prior to the ride: “Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts and keep your hands and belongings inside the attraction!” These rules aren’t just common sense – they’re actually very applicable to anyone and everyone on the ride. Also, pay attention to height restrictions, especially when it comes to your child’s safety.

TAKE BREAKS

The hot sun pounding on you and your children is enough to wear anyone out. Take plenty of breaks and hydrate. Wear sunscreen. Rest a little. It’ll make for a more enjoyable day.
