Packages of alfalfa sprouts sold to Wal-Mart stores in 15 states were recalled due to the finding of salmonella according to details given by a spokeswoman to the Associated Press.
The contaminated alfalfa sprouts have caused personal injuries and illness in 22 people, 11 of those from our state, California. Raw sprouts recalled by Caldwell Fresh Foods were sold to Wal-Mart stores in numerous states. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Caren Epstein said the recalled alfalfa sprouts were taken off shelves as soon as the chain was made aware of the recall. She said 56 stores in Georgia, 47 stores in Louisiana and 75 stores in Illinois were affected. The other affected stores are spread out in 12 other states. Caldwell Foods say the sprouts were also sold to restaurants and other retailers across the country.
The recalled alfalfa sprouts were sold in plastic bags under the Caldwell Fresh Foods brand, plastic cups under the Nature’s Choice brand and plastic containers under the California Fresh Exotics brand.
Alfalfa sprouts are grown in a humid environment which increases the chance to contract salmonella, E.coli or listeria infections. According to government agencies, at least 30 reported outbreaks of food-borne sickness associated with different raw sprouts have occurred since 1996.
This recall is the second multi-state outbreak in fresh produce this month. Romaine lettuce contaminated with E.coli bacteria caused 26 products liability personal injury cases in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and New York. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say another seven are on the way.
