Congratulations, California.  You are not the worst drivers in the country according to a new national survey.  The report dubs New York motorists the worst drivers in America when it comes to knowing the rules.

According to 1010News, the results from an annual written exam given by GMAC, an auto insurance provider, showed that New Yorkers came in last place, averaging scores of 70 percent on their tests.

NY drivers don’t know the rules, but does that mean they are more likely to cause car accidents?

But does this mean they are more likely to cause car accidents?  Not necessarily.  In total, GMAC estimates that 38 million Americans would likely fail the written portion of the drivers’ exam if they had to retake it.

Over 5,000 licensed Americans from all of the 50 states, including Washington, D.C., are annually surveyed to see if they know what the rules of the road are and how to avoid personal injuries when behind the wheel.

Even the most basic of questions regarding traffic laws were confusing and many current drivers answered them incorrectly.  The data indicates that “eighty-five percent could not identify the correct action to take when approaching a steady yellow traffic light.”

Another portion of the exam reviewed distracted driving behaviors while on the road.  When on the road, one in every four people admitted to eating, tweaking with the music system or talking on their cell phone (however, only a reported five percent admitted to texting at the wheel).

So, when it all comes down to it, which state had the best drivers out of all that were surveyed?  Kansas.

Keep working on it, California.  Soon enough we’ll make it to the top of the list as the safest drivers in the nation!
