San Diegans will have the opportunity to make their travels on two wheels instead of four. The annual Bike to Work Day in San Diego will take place on Friday, May 21, 2010. Not only does biking to work reduce the amount of pollution, but the amount of cars on the road is lowered as well. For one day at least, the number of auto accidents can be reduced because of this event.
Anything that cuts down on the amount of crashes makes our auto accident attorneys happy. Every year, millions of people get into rear-end auto accidents as a result of heavy traffic on their way to work or school. Bicycling is not only a way to reduce those auto accidents, but it is more environmentally friendly as well as a way to promote better health.
San Diego ‘Bike to Work Day’ could reduce auto accidents this Friday.
Last year, about 5,000 people in San Diego participated in Bike to Work Day. The event, organized by iCommute, seeks to have an impact similar to the Bike to Work Day that took place in San Francisco last week.
A new wrinkle was added to the event this year comes in the form of the Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge urges companies and organizations to compete with each other within their size category. To win, a company has to have the highest percentage of employees participate.
To help bicyclists, pit stops are provided by Bike to Work Day. At these pit stops, San Diego participants can get free water, snacks and kudos. Last year, 56 pit stop locations were spread throughout the city — a record high for the event. A complete list of pit stops is available if you want to plan your route accordingly.
Don’t feel as if you have to ride your bike from one point to another on Bike to Work Day. The San Diego Metro Transit System (MTS) will be providing free rides on all MTS buses and trolleys for bicyclists. The North County Transit District will be offering free rides on the COASTER. Please note that bike space is limited on buses and trolleys, so be prepared.
As cool as Bike to Work Day is when it comes to saving energy and lowering auto accidents, our auto accident attorneys in San Diego want to remind bicyclists to be careful as they travel. Use bike lanes where available, and don’t drift too far out into the street. A bicycle accident is no way to celebrate a day made especially for you.
