When those entrusted to uphold the law drink and drive, who can be trusted to stop DUI car accidents from causing wrongful death?

That was the case when an off-duty St. Louis officer drank heavily at a bar down the road from her police station and caused a wrong-way driving car accident in March which resulted in the wrongful death of four people.

Our firm’s car accident lawyers in San Diego have seen the pain that relatives and friends go through upon the wrongful death or serious personal injury of a loved one after a car accident caused by a drink driver.  In addition to pain and suffering, drunk driving car accidents cause emotional trauma as the car accident would not have happened if the irresponsible driver had not decided to drink and drive.  When you also consider that wrong-way driving is a top cause of fatal car accidents, then you begin understand the sadness that drunk-driving car accidents cause.

The woman, 41, is being sued for wrongful death and personal injury by parents of the four people killed in the March 21 car accident and a survivor.  The suit accuses her of negligence based on allegations of drunk driving and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m. on March 21, when the woman’s Mitsubishi car was heading east in the westbound lanes of Dougherty Ferry Road.  A Honda was turning right from Des Peres Road onto Dougherty Ferry.

Police have said she posted a blood-alcohol count of .169 three hours after the fatal car crash, more than twice the legal limit of .08.

Drinking impairs your senses (vision and hearing), results in decreased muscle coordination and slower reaction times.  As a result, drunk drivers (DUI) are more likely to cause a car accident than any other driver on the road.  Simply having a designated driver saves people from car accidents.

Drunk driving happens to often, and our car accident lawyers want to inform as many people as we can to prevent DUI car accidents.  Our firm’s car accident attorneys in San Diego have put together a resource page that provides information about drunk driving including different organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The car accident lawyers at our San Diego firm believe that there is absolutely no reason that anyone should drive a car after drinking (DUI).  Just remember, one drink is too many if you plan on driving so always have a sober person take care of the driving.
