Since 2008, a ban on alcohol consumption has been in place at all San Diego beaches, but some citizens continue to drink due to a loophole in the law that allows drinking if you are drinking in the water.
This has led to an event called “Floatopia” where people float in inflatable rafts and drink on the water. Authorities are going to try to close this loophole that stops drinking at the beach once and for all and lowers drunk driving in beach areas at a safety committee meeting according to details from KPBS.
Floatopias could end & drunk driving car accidents may reduce after committee meeting.
Officials want to propose a loophole in the city’s booze ban law at next Wednesday’s June 30, 2010 Public Safety Committee meeting.
The amendment to the ban would end “Floatopias” — floating parties where people drink in inner tubes in the water — by adding “bathers” who are swimming, wading or floating in the water to the ban. This move may end the event once and for all, and potentially lower drunk driving car accidents and other alcohol related problems.
Since last September, four floating parties have been held on Mission Bay, and another one is planned for July 17, 2010 according to details on a Floatopia Facebook page. Each of these parties has attracted between 1,500 to 6,000 people.
Not only are personal injuries possible as a result of these parties, but paying for property damage can end up being very expensive. The two most recent Floatopia parties alone cost about $36,000 to fix. The event causes serious problems within the community that has sparked some outcries at the events.
Our car accident attorneys in San Diego have been watching this issue closely since Floatopia started happening back in September. We always thought it was a dangerous idea, but we were leaving regulation of the event to the proper authorities.
If you choose to drink near the beach this summer, do so at a bar or a friend’s house. One drink is not worth your wrongful death if you happen to accidentally fall into the ocean. No matter how you drink, remember not to drive.
