When you have a child, especially when they are young, you worry about all the things in the world that could potentially harm them. What you might not imagine is that the products you purchase for them can do just as much damage as anything else.
Nearly one million baby strollers have been recalled by the Maclaren Company after it was discovered that the strollers had the potential to cause products liability injuries to children by cutting off the tips of their fingers. The recall was put into effect after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) conducted an investigation into hazards associated with the products.
There have been twelve children’s injuries reported involving the amputation of a child’s finger. Children were losing their fingers because of a dangerous hinge that was causing the stroller to malfunction when unfolded. As it locks into place, the stroller’s hinge can cut off the tip of a child’s finger, which causes disfigurement, as well as large amounts of pain and suffering.
Our firm’s San Diego personal injury attorneys know that when you have design defects in products, particularly ones manufactured for use by children, you risk putting consumers in the crosshairs of personal injury or even wrongful death.
Since 1999, Maclaren has sold its products to Babies “R” Us, Target, and other retailers across the country. All of the nine single and double umbrella models of Maclaren strollers have been recalled, including the Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.
The company is offering free hinge covers to prevent instances of personal injury from occurring in the future, but the CPSC cautions that the strollers’ covers should not be removed unless it is for cleaning purposes.
