Our San Diego car accident lawyers and our firm spend a lot of time wondering why someone carelessly gets behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol.  After all, drunk-drivers cause needless car accidents.  It makes you wonder if anyone caught driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol more than once deserves the right to drive an automobile.

So you can imagine our shock when we found out that a 51-year-old New Mexico man just picked up his 22nd DUI arrest.  The drunk-driver’s blood alcohol content was .393 percent — almost five times the legal DUI limit of .08 percent!

The man was found after a police officer found a car parked on the side of highway with a man on the ground near it.

“He showed signs of slurred speech, as might be normal for any DWI (driving while intoxicated) arrest, which led the officer to believe he might be driving under the influence,” said a State Police Lieutenant.

After the police ran his records, they found out that this particular drunk-driver had been arrested five times in New Mexico and at least 16 times elsewhere for DUI.  He is also facing pending DUI/DWI charges in five different counties.

While we don’t have all the facts, the only good news out of this story is that this man’s DUI did not appear to cause a car accident.  It isn’t a stretch to say that this man has put many other drivers’ lives in danger by driving drunk 22 times — and that’s just the times he was caught.  There is just no place on the road for anyone that risks the wrongful deaths of other drivers because he or she is not willing to do the simple things — finding a designated driver, calling a cab or sleeping it off — that can prevent a drunk-driving car crash.

If you or a loved one gets injured — or worse killed — by a drunk-driver, our firm’s San Diego car accident attorneys will work hard to help you seek justice by fighting for a personal injury settlement that can, hopefully, help you get your life back to normal.
