Much like organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), our auto accident attorneys have been speaking out against the dangers of drunk driving.  MADD has been around for ten years prior to our law offices opening, but our goals are intertwined.

Drunk driving claims so many lives every year, that it’s important for these organizations as well as government to create new programs and policies that do anything and everything possible to prevent drunk driving.

Drunk-driving potentially ended with new technologies?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been working with MADD to help cut wrongful deaths caused by drunk drivers in half.  Technology has created new opportunities, and for the last three years, the NHTSA has been working with leading auto makers as well as the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety to create a program called DADSS or “Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety.”

The program will attempt to correct several issues in a broad range in addition to developing new technology to prevent drunk drivers from enter a vehicle without getting in the way of normal driving by sober drivers.

DADSS will go through a few phases before it nears its completion.  The early phase has already been conducted focusing on finding technologies that can tell what a driver’s blood alcohol content is without getting in the driver’s way — while being reliable, durable, repeatable and cost effective, the biggest element of MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.

Three companies have begun the technology research to create prototypes to be sent to experts in late spring or early summer.  Next, testing in a lab will be done at Harvard Medical School.  NHTSA believes that DADSS can prevent an estimated 9,000 wrongful deaths caused by car accidents where drunk driving was the cause of the crash.

If you want to learn more about the this program, they have a DADSS website that has detailed information about the program and what it is attempting to achieve.

Our auto accident attorneys in San Diego hope this new venture will deliver on its lofty goals.  Eliminating drunk driving once and for all will hopefully save thousands of lives in the future.
