The History of the Downtown San Diego Neighborhood in San Diego, CA

In 1769, the San Diego Presidio was founded a few miles north of present-day Downtown San Diego in what is now the Old Town neighborhood. It was the first European settlement in California and remained the city core for nearly a century.

In the mid-19th century, William Heath Davis and his partners purchased 160 acres of land south of Old Town and close to the San Diego Bay, building roads and a wharf. This development project was called “New Town” by locals, but it did not take off initially because of inadequate fresh water, financial problems, and opposition from the communities of La Playa and Old Town.

In 1867, it was developer Alonzo Horton’s creation of a subdivision just east of the Davis plot that popularized the New Town area. This community flourished as Davis built a new wharf and gave away plots to promote development. Within a few years, a new courthouse was built here and it became the new heart of San Diego.

Our Personal Injury Law Firm’s Primary Practice Areas

At Pines Salomon Personal Injury Lawyers, we accept a wide variety of personal injury cases. If you have been injured and believe someone else’s carelessness or intentional wrongdoing was to blame, we are here to help you. We primarily handle the following types of personal injury cases:

  • Car Accidents: Car accidents are one of the most common causes of serious injuries in San Diego. The Downtown San Diego area has several of the most dangerous intersections in the city, and many Downtown crashes involve pedestrians or cyclists. We protect the rights of accident victims and help them recover compensation after a serious crash.
  • Construction Accidents: Construction sites are dangerous environments with risks of falls, electrocutions, and equipment-related injuries. Our attorneys help injured workers secure compensation through personal injury claims and workers’ compensation.
  • Motorcycle Accidents: With its beautiful scenery and weather, San Diego County has one of the highest numbers of registered motorcycles in the country. However, riders are among the most vulnerable road users and often suffer serious injuries in motorcycle accidents. We fight to ensure riders get the compensation they deserve after an accident.
  • Slip and Falls: Slip and fall accidents can happen anywhere, from hotels and grocery stores to sidewalks and apartment buildings. These accidents are one of the leading causes of brain injuries and spinal cord injuries in San Diego. If you have been hurt in a fall caused by unsafe property conditions, we will help you hold the negligent property owner responsible.
  • Truck Accidents: Large commercial trucks can cause catastrophic injuries in a crash. Truck accidents often involve multiple liable parties and require a thorough investigation. Our firm has the experience and resources to take on trucking companies and their insurers to maximize compensation.
  • Wrongful Death: After the tragic loss of a loved one, Pines Salomon Personal Injury Lawyers can help you pursue a wrongful death claim against the party at fault. This can give your family a sense of justice during this overwhelming time. It can also help you weather any financial insecurities while you grieve and cover your loved one’s final expenses.

No matter what kind of accident you have been involved in, we are standing by to help.

Damages Available in Downtown San Diego Personal Injury Cases

When someone causes harm to another person, California law holds them liable for paying the injured party’s compensatory damages. This is compensation for your financial, physical, and emotional losses and it’s intended to make you whole after your accident.

You are entitled to compensation for your economic damages, which are the financial losses related to your accident. They may include:

  • Current medical bills
  • Future medical expenses
  • Lost earnings
  • Diminished or lost earning capacity if you are left with long-term impairment
  • Property damage
  • Reasonable, necessary out-of-pocket expenses

Injury victims can also recover compensation for non-economic damages. These are the subjective and personal losses you have experienced. Non-economic losses include:

  • Physical pain
  • Mental and emotional anguish and suffering
  • Disfigurement
  • Reduced enjoyment of life

About 96% of cases are settled outside of court. If your case does go to trial, you may be entitled to punitive damages. In California, these damages can be awarded by a jury with clear and convincing evidence of the defendant’s fraud, malice, or oppression. In simpler terms, this includes intentional harm and willful disregard for your safety.

Our legal team will fight for the maximum compensation available under California law.

What Does It Cost To Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in San Diego County?

At Pines Salomon Personal Injury Lawyers, we believe that every injury victim deserves a legal advocate on their side. We accept cases based on a contingency fee agreement, meaning you pay nothing upfront. We only get paid if we win your case. You benefit from the legal representation you need without financial risk or upfront attorneys’ fees.

Statute of Limitations in California Personal Injury Cases

The California statute of limitations for personal injury cases is just two years. This deadline begins from the date of your injury. If your injury was caused by medical malpractice, you have up to three years from the date you discovered your injury or should have known about it.

There are some limited exceptions to these deadlines. You may have more time to file if your claim involves a government entity or defective product. In some scenarios, the deadline can be paused, such as injuries to children.

It’s crucial to speak with a lawyer without delay to ensure your case is filed on time and important evidence is documented before it’s lost.
