What Day of the Year Has the Most Car Accidents

Have you ever wondered, “What day of the year has the most car accidents?” You might be tempted to think of an adult holiday or celebration associated with heavy drinking, like New Year’s Eve or Super Bowl Sunday.

While it’s true that both of these days make the list of the top ten days of the year with the most car accidents, neither ranks as number one.

The day of the year with the most accidents – as well as the reasons for them – might come as a surprise.

What Day of the Year Has the Most Car Accidents in the U.S.?

Surprisingly, the Fourth of July ranks first for the day of the year with the most car accidents. While people often drink on July 4th, it’s also a family holiday more likely to be celebrated by lighting fireworks at home with loved ones than by going to the bars.

So why is July 4th the day with the most accidents in the nation? As it turns out, there’s more than one reason for the high number of serious and fatal crashes that take place on America’s birthday.

Common Reasons for Fourth of July Accidents

Drinking certainly plays a role in Fourth of July accidents. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that nearly half of the traffic fatalities that occur on Independence Day weekend are alcohol-related.

However, alcohol consumption isn’t the only reason why this day sees the most accidents. Some of the factors that contribute to July 4th crashes include:

  • Drinking and driving
  • Driving while under the influence of drugs
  • Congested roads from holiday traffic
  • Tourists driving in unfamiliar areas
  • Increased chance of reckless driving in summer

July weather is usually sunny and hot, with less chance of inclement weather. The lack of rain, fog, and ice makes it much easier to drive faster and more recklessly. Add to that the excitement and high spirits of a holiday, and it’s easy to see why more crashes happen in the summer.

The NSC also reports that July ranks third as the month with the most fatal car accidents, following closely behind August and October.

Staying Safe on July 4th

The statistics show that of all the days in a year, driving on July 4th brings the greatest chance of ending up in a fatal accident. Knowing this statistic can help you plan to keep yourself and your family safe.

Never drive after you’ve been drinking, and take extra care to be mindful of speed limits and other traffic laws.

However, following the laws is no guarantee that you won’t end up in an accident. Stay aware that on July 4th, the roads are more likely to be filled with intoxicated and reckless drivers and tourists who may be lost or confused.  Practice defensive driving and be alert for drivers who aren’t driving safely. If you do end up in a crash caused by someone else, you should get medical attention immediately and speak with a car accident lawyer about recovering compensation for the damage.
