16 arrests were made on Cinco De Mayo by police at a drunk-driving checkpoint in Chula Vista, reports 10 News.  Currently, 5 people are facing charges of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, while the other arrests were for various violations by drivers.

Total count for the night added up to 25 citations — including one for marijuana possession — 15 vehicles impounded and 16 San Diego residents county-wide arrested for drunk-driving.

Sheriff’s deputies around the county, including Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, went to the streets in plainclothes to prevent wrongful deaths from drunk-driving accidents that are frequently associated with this early-May celebration.

Between 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5th (Cinco De Mayo) and 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 6th, Chula Vista law enforcement officers witnessed approximately 2,350 vehicles pass through the DUI checkpoint set up at the 700 block of Telegraph Canyon Road.
