Distraction. It’s unfortunately so common behind the wheel. Anything can be a distraction… the radio, coffee, lunch, makeup, children, and of course the quintessential distraction – the cell phone. Sadly, distraction is one of the most common causes of accidents today.

In a recent news report, we learned that distraction was the alleged cause of yet another San Diego accident, this time involving a bicyclist and a driver who is said to have been tending to her small child when the collision occurred.

According to NBC San Diego (6/16/2015), the tragic accident happened when a driver unintentionally swerved into a bicycle lane, hitting a well-known San Diego executive cycling along Camino Del Sur. Reports indicate the driver was allegedly distracted while turning back to tend to her child.

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet, but tragically, his bodily injury was severe. Although he received medical treatment at a local La Jolla hospital, the man unfortunately passed away.

The driver in question has not been cited for any traffic violations stemming from the bicycle accident, although police officials continue to investigate the accident.

SAN DIEGO: A BIKING CITY

Look no further than our beautiful beaches and city trails aplenty, and you’ll see that San Diego is the ideal city for foot and pedal traffic. With great weather, too, San Diego is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy all the city has to offer. The truth is that, although we love to be outside, we must all understand the possible implications of being a driver, bicyclist and pedestrian in America’s Finest City. In fact, no matter where you live, the risk is eminent – we must share the road no matter how we travel, whether by foot, bike, motorcycle or vehicle.

DRIVER DISTRACTION

Drivers are urged to reevaluate their driving choices and become diligent sharers of the road. The good news is that most drivers are courteous and aware of bikes, pedestrians and motorcyclists. Unfortunately, though, even the most courteous driver can cause serious problems on the road when distraction enters the picture.

As personal injury attorneys, we want to remind all drivers out there to simply put every single last thing down and focus on the road ahead. Your life – and the lives of others – depends on this very important choice. If you must tend to something, simply pull over. It takes one minute to pull over and do what you have to do. Don’t risk “multi-tasking” on the road. Make good choices out there!

WHEN PERSONAL INJURY OCCURS

We often get injury cases that involve bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists – especially in the summer. Unfortunately, in many cases, the driver can be found negligent and the injured party can receive compensation for injuries, lost wages and pain and suffering. If you have been injured in a San Diego bicycle accident, hire a personal injury attorney to fight on your behalf. Now more than ever, you need legal experts on your side.
