When an accident occurs, it’s up to you to stop and respond. Don’t risk the alternative possibilities: a hit-and-run charge, a citation or, in one San Diego case, a tragic fatality. San Diego 6 News has reported that a driver was been killed as a result of having fled from the scene of a traffic accident in San Marcos.

The news report is certainly tragic as much as it is staggering: a senseless death has occurred needlessly in light of an otherwise injury-free traffic accident.

According to authorities, the individual in question allegedly tried to run away from the accident by hopping over a median lane and into oncoming traffic. In an effort to evade the scene on foot, the individual was tragically hit by several oncoming cars resulting in his fatality.

The death occurred on Route 78 near Nordahl Road in San Marcos at roughly 4:30 a.m.

CALIFORNIA LAW: TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

It’s important to know that California law requires drivers to stop after having been involved in an accident. Please don’t risk putting your life at risk and evading the scene of an accident. We want each and every San Diego driver to remain safe and alive! Even if you feel you may be “caught” for something such as no insurance, driving on a suspended license or even drinking and driving, it is best to just stop for the accident and follow the law – your life could depend on it!

ALWAYS PULL OVER IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT

Even if you believe there is little or no property damage or personal injury, it is important to stop if an accident has occurred. California law requires that all drivers stop for an accident in the event of injury or property damage, or both.

EXCHANGE INFORMATION

In most cases, you may be required by law to exchange information following a San Diego car accident. You may want to write down the name, phone number, driver’s license number and insurance company information for the other person in the event you will need it later.

RECORD IMPORTANT DETAILS ABOUT THE ACCIDENT

If you have experienced injury or property damage, it may be a good idea to write down important information about the accident as details may soon become fuzzy following the stress that soon follows a traffic accident. Also, take pictures of your vehicle or other aspects of the accident that you feel would be important at a later date.
