Two testosterone replacement gel products have been given warnings by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency that is in charge of regulating drugs and medical devices, in an effort to warn consumers of conditions before products liability claims arise.

The San Diego personal injury attorneys at our firm believe that companies should make consumers aware of potential side effects so consumers know about potential hazards.  The Food and Drug Administration can only do so much to help regulate harmful drugs, but there are still hundreds of drugs on the market that lead to products liability related injuries because of side effects.

The FDA issued warnings to the Solvay company, the company that produces the gel known as AndroGel, and Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. who is responsible for production of Testim, another gel.  The products are intended to produce testosterone in men who either do not produce the hormone or produce it in very low amounts.

Medical side effects of the gel have become more frequent, and the FDA is now requiring a warning on the bottle’s label to warn consumers of these side effects before personal injuries and products liability claims happen.

Very young children who have come into contact with the gel have experienced premature enlargement of genitals and premature growth of pubic hair.  Other side effects include advanced bone age, increased libido and aggressive behavior.

In an episode of the television show “House,” a similar situation occurred and the little girl affected had more serious conditions such as heart disease, arthritis and stroke.  These medical treatments are necessary for people that require testosterone, but it is important to be safe around children who may suffer from side effects.

Our firm’s personal injury attorneys in San Diego know that when side effects lead to the personal injury of the user, hiring a products liability attorney can help you correct the mistake from a company.  We can also help get your medical bills paid along with any pain and suffering from the product.
