Sometimes drunk people make a police officer’s job quite simple.

That was certainly the case in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009 after a car accident led to a chain reaction in which two men were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and another for public drunkenness.

Our firm’s experienced San Diego car accident lawyers know that you should never driver while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, legal and illegal ones.  You put everyone’s life at risk for wrongful death by being a reckless driver who, instead of having someone come pick them up, got behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

The madness started at about 1:15 a.m. when police were called to Imperial Beach after a man had a car accident with a parked car after drunk-driving.  Before the authorities arrived, the owner of the parked car came out to confront the drunk driver, who belligerently punched her in the face for her troubles.  Thankfully, the woman did not require any medical attention.  Sheriff’s deputies arrested the man on suspicion of batter and DUI.

With one drunken fool down, there were still two to go.  As deputies were taking the first man into custody, another man “staggered into the scene.”  That man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.  Thankfully, he was not driving a car.

But, just minutes after the second arrest, a friend of the first man — the one who caused a car accident with a parked car while DUI — pulled up and loudly questioned the police about what there were doing.  This man was also intoxicated, and deputies arrested him on suspicion of DUI.

While this whole event seems quite comical, these stupid decisions were no laughing matter.  These men would not have been arrested had they not drank and got behind the wheel.  Both men could easily have caused a wrongful death in a car accident or even killed themselves.

While neither caused a car accident, DUIs kill innocent people every day of the year, but the sad part is that DUI accidents are completely preventable with the right tools and education.  Two men made bad decisions and then compounded them by arguing with police.  Hopefully, in the future, these men will make safer decisions for everyone involved.  Otherwise, there is no place on the road for people like that.
