We might not have seen the final chapter of the economic downturn, but one positive side effect seems to be that Americans are driving safer, with car accident statistics dropping in the last few years.

Why?  No one seems to know the exact reason, but studies conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show a declining trend in automobile accidents, especially fatal car accidents.

According to the NHTSA, the current numbers indicate that the rate of wrongful deaths per 100 million miles of vehicle travel on streets in the United States is the lowest it has been since the 1970’s.

Our car accident lawyers see this as great progress, but we also question exactly how these numbers were generated.  Is it that drivers have gotten better at obeying all the rules of the road and are safer behind the wheel?  Has technology on cars made them safer?  Or has the bad economic climate put a stop to the high number of commuters that used to drive to jobs they no longer have?

What the data from the study currently shows is that in the second quarter of 2009 there were 1.19 deaths for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled versus the 1.1 deaths from fatal auto accidents seen in the first quarter.

Despite the decline, our car accident lawyers know that an auto accident can happen any time, any where.  Best thing to do is continue the trend of buckling up your seatbelt, keeping yourself free from distractions while driving, and never using drugs or alcohol when behind the wheel.

Another good resource to have on your side is proper car insurance, so you can be covered and protected if an auto accident should happen.

Together, we can keep this positive trend going strong for many years to come.
