Our firm’s San Diego car accident attorneys are always concerned when companies are sold to new buyers and take control of business.  New buyers are not familiar with products, and their new ideas can lead to products liability lawsuits.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., a Chinese construction-equipment maker, has made plans to purchase General Motors’ (GM) Hummer brand car.  Tengzhong is buying the GM brand of Hummer, not the military Humvee, which is made by AM General Corp. of South Bend, Indiana.

The purchase may help General Motors create a more positive image with consumers and politicians, but the buy can also lead to car accidents from possible design defects as the Chinese company can look to improve Hummer’s cars with newer engines that are possibly more fuel efficient.

Hummer cars have been popular in the United States, but the rise of gas prices gradually in the last three years placed more of an emphasis on fuel economy and fewer gas guzzling cars.  As a result, cars like Hummer suffered in the market.

The new sale to Tengzhong can keep the Hummer brand available, but will Chinese automakers know what is best for American drivers?  Will Chinese tinkering and experimentation lead to car accidents in the United States leading to whiplash, spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis (i.e. paraplegia and quadriplegia) and traumatic brain injuries like concussions.

Hopefully, new ownership does not lead to old problems.

Our car accident attorneys in San Diego believe that it is possible for new owners to have new visions to make products better for consumers.  However, these new ideas can lead to more harm than good because new products can lead to car accidents because of possible design defects.
