California Highway Patrol is making its last call — and warning — for drunk-drivers.

In an attempt to lower DUI car accidents, CHP has received a grant, entitled “Sobriety Checkpoint Operations and Roving DUI Enforcement (SCORE),” of nearly $5.9 million to provide funding to remove drunk-drivers from California’s roadways.

Our firm’s drunk-driving accident lawyers are always in favor of programs that stop people from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.  They believe that there is absolutely no excuse or reason to use alcohol or drugs, then decide to operate a motor vehicle.

“Our goal is to save lives by ensuring California’s roadways are a safe place for all motorists, said the CHP Commissioner. “Removing impaired drivers from the road is a giant step in that direction.”

In 2007, 1,489 people were killed in wrongful death accidents caused by drunk-driving in California, while an additional 30,783 people were injured in DUI auto accidents.

With SCORE, CHP officers will work overtime to arrest drunk-drivers.  They will setup a minimum of 110 sobriety checkpoints, 35 DUI task force operations and deploy proactive DUI enforcement operations statewide.

An addition to stopping drunk-driving accidents, CHP will also be on the lookout for speeders, unsafe passers, red light, stop sign runners and unseat-belted drivers.

This program began operation on January 1, 2009 and will continue until September 30, 2009.

This is music to the ears of our drunk-driving accident attorneys.  We hope that this crackdown will give us lower car accident statistics.  Too many people are dying each year in preventable DUI accidents.  Programs like SCORE go a long way towards meeting the goal of improved car driver safety.

That way, we all score and we all win.
