The law is coming after Oceanside’s drunk-drivers.

The California Highway Patrol office in Oceanside received $266,000 from a state agency to reduce drunken driving on a stretch of state Route 76 where 13 people have died in DUI-related car accidents in the past three years.  The money from state Office of Highway Safety will cover salaries for more patrols and sobriety checkpoints along a 38.3-mile stretch of Route 76.In the past three years, 13 people have died and 303 have been injured in DUI-related car crashes along the stretch of highway.  Drunk-driving is one of the top causes of car accidents in the U.S.

“The grant will pay for aggressive DUI enforcement, public education and community outreach to reduce DUI-involved collisions,” said the Oceanside- based CHP Captain.”This is a crime that leads to a lot of deaths and serious injuries every year.”

In 2007, an estimated 12,998 people died in alcohol-impaired car crashes involving a driver with an illegal BAC (.08 or greater).  These wrongful deaths constitute 31.7 percent of the 41,059 total traffic fatalities in 2007.  According to statistics by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk-Driving) about three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related  car crash at some time in their lives and on average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes.

The firm where our San Diego car accident lawyers work has seen the pain that relatives and friends go through upon the wrongful death or serious injury of a loved one after a car accident.  If there is anything that law enforcement officials can do to stop drunk driving from happening in the future, we are all ears.
