Toyota has issued a voluntary recall of 1.7 million vehicles across the globe including 245,000 Lexus IS and GS vehicle models in the United States. The brand once known for reliability now suffers after record recalls, ongoing lawsuits for car accidents caused by involuntary acceleration, federal investigations and federal fines that have reached a record in its class.
If you are a U.S. driver of the following Lexus models, you are affected by the Toyota recall.
2006 to 2007 Lexus GS 300/350
2006 to 2009 Lexus IS 250
2006 to 2008 Lexus IS 350
The reason for the voluntary recall includes insufficient tightening of the fuel pressure sensor, according to a statement issued by Toyota on Wednesday. The sensor, connected to certain engine fuel delivery pipes, may loosen over time according to their statement.
“If loosening occurs, fuel could leak past a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and the delivery pipe and through the threaded portion of the sensor,” said Toyota.
According to the Lexus website, drivers may be able to smell a fuel odor in their vehicle if and when the condition occurs. Whether or not these conditions could contribute to a car accident is unknown.
Toyota has not issued a start date for the voluntary recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also has not posted any information regarding the Lexus recall on its website.
Internationally, Toyota is recalling 1.3 million vehicles to fix a different condition on a fuel delivery pipe and high-pressure fuel pump check valve. These vehicles include the Voxy, Noah, Isis minivans, Avensis and RAV4 in Japan.
Now, Toyota faces a total global recall of approximately 12 million vehicles since December 2009. And, in 2010, Toyota paid the U.S. government a total of $48.8 million in civil penalties over its slow response to recalls, a record number in Toyota and U.S. history.
