In 2008, National City police officers responded to 28 car accidents where running a red light was the cause.  In 2009, there were 33 car accidents caused by the same thing.  A report by the San Diego Union Tribune revealed that National City council members plan to use red light cameras to reduce the amount of speeding and running of red lights.

Our car accident lawyer know that red light cameras are used in many other cities surrounding San Diego (El Cajon, Escondido and Del Mar to name a few).  These red light cameras are used as a deterrent to keep drivers from causing potential car accidents caused by either speeding or running red lights, both top causes of car accidents in the United States.

Red light cameras to be installed some National City intersections.

“As much as we don’t like Big Brother, we don’t have enough officers to be out on every corner.”

That’s what National City Mayor Ron Morrison told the San Diego Union Tribune when he talked about installing red light cameras at five trouble spots in National City.  A final decision was postponed until June 1, 2010 to give residents another chance to ask questions and give their opinion on the subject.

Under the plan, red light cameras will be installed at five trouble intersections in National City: Plaza Boulevard & Euclid Avenue; Highland Avenue & 30th Street; Paradise Valley Road & Eighth Street; Highland Avenue & Eighth Street; and Highland Avenue & Plaza Boulevard.

The three-year red light camera contract with Redflex Traffic Systems of Scottsdale, Arizona includes installation of up to 15 cameras in National City, but city officials only want those five mentioned above to start out the implementation.  Redflex’s Bob Hickman said the cameras aren’t supposed to make money, just increase safety.

The average red light camera ticket is about $445, which Hickman says is a proven deterrent against speeding and running red lights.

Our car accident lawyers in National City see these cameras as a way to make driving safe for everyone.  Too many times, drivers speed through yellow or red lights which can potentially cause a dangerous car accident.  Remember, if you’re driving and a light goes from green to yellow, slow down.  Don’t speed up.  You can wait to catch the next green light and get to your destination safely.
