A therapy once considered improbable in treating patients with traumatic brain injuries, a hormone (progesterone) has been getting positive results in preventing brain damage from traumatic brain injuries and stroke.

Progesterone is usually thought of as a sex hormone since it occurs in female mammals at higher quantities than males especially during pregnancy and menstruation, but the hormone can reduce the damages of traumatic brain injuries.

Our firm’s San Diego personal injury lawyers are encouraged to hear about new treatments for patients with personal injury.  Traumatic brain injuries can happen any time, so we believe it is important to be ready to treat in the best ways possible.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) like concussions can be a result of something like a car accident where tons of pressure and force can be applied to the brain and skull that cause these traumatic brain injuries.

The National Institutes of Health will begin funding a study testing the hormone in about 1,100 emergency patients with moderate to severe head trauma.

The study will take place at 17 hospitals in 15 states in the United States and will last up to five years at a cost of about $28 million.  It will be the make-or-break study to prove whether or not progesterone can lower wrongful deaths.

“You can’t undo the initial injury, but you hope to reduce the second injury, and progesterone may have a role in reducing the inflammatory process,” said Lori Shutter, director of neurocritical care at the University of Cincinnati Hospital, one of the 17 hospital study sites.

If this treatment is successful, it can be the start in helping people with permanent physical disabilities from traumatic brain injuries get back to having a batter quality of life before the accident or event that caused the TBI.

Our San Diego personal injury attorneys look forward to the results this study presents.  If the study proves progesterone can actually diminish the permanent effects of TBIs, many patients in the United States will receive very good news.
