Speeding car accidents involving motorists in California which result in personal injury or wrongful death are on the decline.  The California Highway Patrols’ year-long project called “Saving Lives In California II” was aimed at limiting the number of car accidents from speeding and the decline of these car accidents is proof that the program has been a success.

Our car accident attorneys are thrilled at these new findings as car accidents cause an immense array of personal injury such as spinal cord injuries, whiplash or even wrongful deathSpeeding is one of the top causes of car accidents and if you are involved in a car crash the forces experienced by the human body in a collision increase as the speed increases.

Through September 2008, there were 255 wrongful deaths, compared to the 2006 baseline totals when there were 290 deaths.  For speed-related personal injuries, there were 25 ,584 personal injuries in 2008 and 30,726 in2006 baseline totals for a 16.1 decrease.

“The importance of this project cannot be understated,” said the CHP Commissioner.  “Collisions resulting in personal injury and wrongful death, where speed was the primary collision factor, are preventable.”

The CHP’s SLIC II project incorporated a three-prong strategy for reducing speed-related collisions.

  • The first element was to reduce collisions on state highways.  This was accomplished by using Light Detection and Ranging, (LIDAR) , radar and added enforcement on the state highways.
  • The second element of the project was to car accidents on county roads, using radar trailers, and the third strategy was to reduce motorcycle accidents on all highways.
  • Officers also enforced seat belt and child safety seat laws.  A large portion of the 20,000 citations that were issued during the project, were for lack of seat belt usage.

Our car accident lawyers know that speeding is one of the most common factors contributing to traffic accidents in the United States but are encouraged by the statistics showing a decline in speed-related car accidents.
