When it comes to drunken driving, a wealth of public programs strive to educate the masses on the dangers associated with driving under the influence. But despite these efforts, many individuals get behind the wheel even though they’ve had too much to drink. If we’re to believe statistics that tell us that 17 million people drive drunk at least once per year, then we are each fortunate to be here today.
But not every case of drunken driving is so fortunate.
In San Diego last Thursday, an alleged DUI-related car accident left many lives changed forever. A man, 44, and his female passenger, 19, were traveling southbound on Midland Road when the man ran a red light, moments later colliding with an emergency fire truck headed eastbound on Poway Road.
He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The young lady died at the scene. According to reports, both were intoxicated at the time of the accident, with the female’s blood alcohol levels reaching three times that the legal limit.
This latest run in with the law was not the man’s first. Reports indicate that he had been released from jail two days before the crash. He also had a previous record for DUI, drug paraphernalia and possession of drugs.
Both had known each other for one year.
The man faces three charges in wake of his arrest Thursday including vehicular manslaughter. An arraignment in San Diego has been scheduled for next week.
