Commuters in the Clairemont and La Jolla areas of San Diego have the opportunity to voice their opinion about a proposed trolley extension to their neighborhood.  The new trolley line would serve northern parts of San Diego and can reduce the amount of traffic, which, in turn, reduces the number of car accidents caused by rush hour traffic.

Our car accident lawyers believe there are good examples of how public transportation systems can be a benefit to a city of millions.  New York City, of course, is an example that many cities model.  San Diego has a good transit system, but an extension to the north could improve ridership and cut down on the amount of cars on the 5, 15 and 805 freeways.

Can a new trolley extension help lessen the amount of car accidents on freeways?

The new 11-mile extension would operate north running along existing railroad tracks until it reaches Gilman Drive at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).  The trolley then circles through the campus and back out to University City.  Current proposed trolley stations include Clairemont Drive, University Center Lane, Tecolote Road, Balboa Avenue and two UCSD stations.

To gauge public opinion, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has set up meetings where commuters can both find out what is being planned as well as adding their own input.

A SANDAG Project Development Program Manager hopes funding for the new line between the TransNet Early Action Program, which needs to be voter-approved, and the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts Fund.  New Starts funding helped with the Mission Valley East line and the Sprinter.

If the project goes according to schedule, the new extension will be up and running in 2016.

Our car accident attorneys in San Diego know that rear-end car accidents are very prevalent on busy freeways, and public transportation helps eliminate these accidents which are known to cause injuries like whiplash.  No matter what your position is on the subject, you should drop by these meetings to voice your opinion.
